Traditions, Legacies and Legends

At Northern, tradition isn’t just about the past. It’s about our people, today and tomorrow, and the stories we author along the way. All of them speak of the strong bonds we build at Â鶹´«Ã½.

POLAR PLUNGE–We’ve been known to brave temperatures in the teens to raise funds for charity during Delta Sigma Phi’s Polar Plunge.

THE SPIRIT ROCK–Painting the Spirit Rock is the way we express our Polar Bear pride in support of events, clubs and organizations.

FESTIVAL OF COLORS–We celebrate spring’s arrival with the Hindu Festival of Colors, a free-for-all frolic of throwing colored powder at each other.

Holi Festival

GET DOWN AND DIRTY–If we’re not tossing colored powder at each other, we’re flinging mud. The unofficial start of the school year happens each fall during our annual Mud Volleyball Tournament.

KLONDIKE SPIRIT–We cheer each other on for absolutely everything. From game day to exam day, we have each other’s backs.

SITTING WITH OUR SWEETHEARTS–Â鶹´«Ã½ draws together people who might not otherwise cross paths. Polar Bear sweethearts often get engaged on campus, and the stone benches scattered across campus commemorate their love.

POLAR BEAR KISSES–Studying is a great start, but everyone knows the surest way to ace an exam is to kiss the nose of the polar bear in Dicke Hall.

RUN, WALK OR ROLL–No matter the time of day, someone is putting Â鶹´«Ã½â€™s nearly three-mile Green Monster jogging path to good use. But it’s much more than just a jogging path; students, faculty and the community can be found riding bikes, rollerblading and w
